REVIEW: Mistletoe Mansion by Samantha Tonge

Title: Mistletoe Mansion
Author: Samantha Tonge
Publisher: Carina Press
Publication Date: November, 2014
Genre: Chick-Lit
Buy The Book: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Description: Kimmy Jones has three loves: cupcakes, gossip magazines and dreaming of getting fit just by owning celeb workouts.

When Kimmy's Sensible Boyfriend told her he didn't approve of her longing for the high life or her dream of starting a cupcake company Kimmy thought she could compromise – after all, she did return those five-inch Paris Hilton heels! But asking her to trade in cake-making for a job sorting potatoes is a step too far.

So, newly single - and newly homeless – Kimmy needs a dusting of Christmas luck. And, masquerading as a professional house sitter, her new temporary home is the stunning Mistletoe Mansion. Soon she’s best buds with glamorous next door golf WAG Melissa, and orders are pouring in for her fabulous Merry Berry cupcakes! The only thorn in her side is handsome handyman Luke, a distraction she definitely doesn't need. And talking of distractions, something very odd is going on at night…

Kimmy is finally living the life she’s always wanted. But will her glimpse into the glittering lifestyle of the rich and famous be as glamorous as she’s always imagined?

My Thoughts: Mistletoe Mansion by new to me author Samantha Tonge delivers a cute and entertaining story about a woman who has big dreams and a big heart. Unfortunately, her dreams don’t match those of her boyfriend, Adam. He drops the ultimate ultimatum on her…give up her dreams of starting her own cupcake business and get a dreadful and boring full time job or they are finished. Now, single and homeless, Kimmy and her best friend, Jess, also newly homeless, take a job housesitting at Mistletoe Mansion until it sells. Neither one of them has any experience or has a clue what they are doing but they manage to pull it off and make it work.

The secondary characters of Melissa, Luke and Terry bring so much texture to this story. The author brings all of these characters to life with unique personalities that the reader gets a real sense of who they are and feels a connection with all of them. Adding to the mix are the strange goings-on at Mistletoe Mansion…Christmas music being played by nobody…smoke coming in under doorways…it has driven off several previous house sitters but Kimmy is determined to do a good job and stay on until the place sells…paranormal spookiness or not! There are quite a few twists and surprises in this story that I was not expecting but really enjoyed.

My Final Verdict: Mistletoe Mansion was a very good choice for my Christmas holiday reading list. I recommend this story to anyone who enjoys Christmas themes, romance, fun and a little bit of paranormal on the side. I have a few other titles by this author that I am very much anticipating reading.

REVIEW: The Christmas Bake-Off by Abby Clements

Title: The Christmas Bake-Off
Author: Abby Clements
Publisher: Quercus
Publication Date: November, 2012
Genre: Chick-Lit
Buy The Book: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Description: With Christmas just around the corner, the residents of Skipley village are gearing up for the annual bake off, and tensions are high.

Winning means a lot to everyone involved - talented cake-shop owner Katie dreams of baking stardom, Rachel wants to prove she's more than a stay-at-home mum, and John hopes his culinary skills will impress the woman he loves.

But when the judges discover that some cakes have been tampered with, the villagers' loyalties are called into question - whose ambition would stretch to sabotage, and why?

The Christmas Bake-Off is an exclusive short story from Abby Clements, author of Meet Me Under the Mistletoe.

My Thoughts: Very short, very fast Christmas story about the annual Christmas bake-off in Skipley village. The story was too short to feel a real connection to any of the characters and just when things started to get interesting with the revelation of the tampering, the story was over. If you are looking for something short and fast that can be read in one sitting, this would be a good choice for the holiday reading pile. If you prefer your stories to have more substance, depth and a connection to the characters, you may want to look for something else.

REVIEW: A Christmas In Disguise by Katie Fforde

Title: A Christmas In Disguise
Author: Katie Fforde
Publisher: Cornerstone Digital
Publication Date: November, 2015
Genre: Chick-Lit
Buy The Book: Amazon

Description: When Jo’s friend Andi asks if she’ll stand in to cook Christmas lunch for her employer, Jo reluctantly agrees. She knows Andi will lose her job if she doesn’t, and wants to help out her friend.

Jo is nervous because Andi’s boss is a well-known celebrity diva, who outright refuses to have anyone but Andi cook for her. But she also insists Andi wears full chef's whites so the girls think they’ll get away with it … it’s the perfect Christmas disguise.

But when Jo runs into one of the guests - good looking and very smart Anthony - things get even more complicated…

My Thoughts: Readers looking for a short story with a Christmas romance theme will enjoy A Christmas In Disguise by new to me author Katie Fforde. In order for her friend, Andi, to spend Christmas with her family, Jo agrees to stand in for her to make Christmas dinner for Andi’s employer. The only problem is that Andi’s employer is not very flexible and will not appreciate anyone but Andi cooking the meal. Jo and Andi concoct a plan where Jo will disguise herself as Andi in the hopes that nobody will notice.

This was a cute story that kept me entertained waiting for the other shoe to drop as Jo tries to balance it all and meeting one of the guests, Anthony, was perfect, especially when the reader finds out Jo isn’t the only one pretending to be someone she isn’t. Romance and fun are the perfect recipe for Christmas.

REVIEW: Love Is A Four-Legged Word by Michele Gorman

Title: Love Is A Four-Legged Word
Author: Michele Gorman
Publisher: Notting Hill Press
Publication Date: October, 2016
Genre: Chick-Lit
Buy The Book: Amazon

Description: Best friends Scarlett and Shannon spend their days tangled up in dog leads and covered in fur, running their dog business together. Scarlett’s intensive training course, Ruff Love, fixes owners as much as their pets, while Shannon spends her days walking spoiled pooches.

They share more than their business though: they also share Scarlett's husband, Rufus, who's been Shannon's best friend since childhood. It's a cozy setup. Unless one of them has a secret...

When Scarlett and Rufus's baby plans are decimated by a surprise turn of events, their marriage hits the rocks and they both turn to Shannon. All three relationships are pushed to breaking point, but when loyalties become divided, how do you decide who's most important?

My Thoughts: Love Is A Four-Legged Word by Michele Gorman offers a light story that perfectly blends romance, fertility and dogs. The story centers on best friends and partners Scarlett and Shannon who run a dog business together. Scarlett is married to Shannon’s best friend, Rufus and Shannon harbors a major crush on “Mr. Darcy,” a man she sees in the park, but lacks courage and confidence to approach him. The business is doing well, with Scarlett providing dog training and Shannon providing dog walking, but Scarlett and Rufus have been struggling to conceive. After several months of trying, they go to a fertility specialist to be tested, but discover their plans aren’t going to develop as they had hoped. The stress puts a major strain on their marriage and thrusts Shannon into the middle.

I really enjoyed this story as I got to know Scarlett, Shannon and Rufus. I got a really good sense of Scarlett’s frustration with the lack of pregnancy and her feelings of anger and resentment towards pregnant women. I thoroughly enjoyed meeting all of Scarlett’s dog training clients, both the four-legged and two-legged ones. The secondary characters bring interesting layers to this story with their own personalities and voices. I felt more connected to Shannon and could relate to the awkwardness she feels and was cheering for her to find her happiness. I especially liked Shannon’s attraction to “Mr. Darcy” and am hopeful there is a story for Shannon in the future.

I wanted to be angry at Rufus for the way he behaved, but I felt sorry for him for the most part. I think his reactions and behavior are quite typical when handed the kind of news he gets and though I wish he had behaved differently, I think he and Scarlett needed a major wakeup call so they could find their way back to each other.

My Final Verdict: If you want hours of entertainment when you read, you can’t go wrong with Michele Gorman. She writes great characters you can easily relate to and care about with storylines that are entertaining, you can get lost in the book for hours. I highly recommend this book for sappy romantics like me looking for a wonderful story as well as people who like their romance mixed in with four-legged characters or characters struggling with everyday issues and sensitive relationship problems.

New Arrivals To The TBR Pile In November

Title: Karma Inc. by Melanie James
Description: Witches, Werebears, and Imps. Oh my!

Waiting for Karma is fine—for the patient. But for the rest of us, it sure would be nice to give Karma a little nudge every once in a while.

Too many dates that turned out to be losers or liars? Have a problem with two-faced backstabbers? And don’t even start with the so-called customer service centers. There comes a day when enough is really, truthfully, enough already. For Kelly and Esmeralda, two snarky single witches, that day was yesterday. After applying their witchcraft to dish out a little magical payback, they realize they have a penchant for the dark art of revenge. And who’s to say a witch can’t make a few bucks with a talent like that?

Doing the odd job was fun and gratifying. Then along came an unusual client with a pitch for an idea, “Karma Inc.-Reality TV.” The witches set up shop in the sleepy little town of Caldron Falls, Wisconsin. By enabling the good citizens to settle old scores, they hoped to transform the town into a virtual coliseum of televised revenge. It didn’t take long before a few inconvenient and unexpected dead bodies began to pile up. To complicate matters, Caldron Falls just happens to have more than its fair share of paranormal creatures, not to mention a Chicago mobster seemingly bent on taking over the town.

Can Esmeralda and Kelly solve the rash of unexplained deaths before they get the blame and end up behind bars? What will Marie Laveau and the Witches Union have to say about this? And as any fool knows, Karma carries a roundtrip ticket.

A more dutiful maiden might cede to the Laird’s command and meekly accept her fate, but Madeline has never been obedient. She decides to run away, though she never dreams that Rhys will pursue her.

REVIEW: One Night In New Delhi by Kemberlee Shortland

Title: One Night In New Delhi (City Nights #27)
Author: Kemberlee Shortland
Publisher: Tirgearr Publishing
Publication Date: October, 2016
Genre: Erotica
Buy The Book: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Description: Hannah Maguire and Sudesh Kumar had been lovers in Dublin City, both studying for their degrees in similar areas of Archaeology. What she had treated as a college romance, Hannah realized, as he was leaving Dublin for the job of a lifetime back home in India, was she had lost her heart to him.

Now, five years later, Hannah is working as an archivist in the National Museum in Dublin when she's invited to the National Museum of India in New Delhi to inspect a new and rare artifact found on an archaeological dig.

The last person she expects to see when she enters the museum is Sudesh. She didn’t know where he was, or even if he was still in India, but soon learns he's the one who made the discovery, and had been the one encouraging the museum to invite her onto the project.

On meeting, everything they'd shared washes over Hannah—all of the love and passion, and a heart so broken, she still hadn't recovered. To make things more difficult, it's Deepavali/Diwali and Sudesh has promises to make it a memorable experience.

Will this one night really be one to remember, or will it send Hannah into a tailspin she might not recover from this time?

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed this culturally rich story about a young Irish woman who finds herself in India to work on an archaeological project with the national museum in India. Hannah has been nursing a broken heart for the last five years when her lover, Sudesh Kumar, left her in Dublin to take a job in India, so it comes as a huge surprise to her when she crosses paths with Sudesh again and learns he is responsible for her invitation to the project.

I really liked Hannah and Sudesh. The emotions they still feel for one another remain strong and, though, it frustrates me to have a big misunderstanding plot, I thought the author handled it perfectly. The characters are both nursing emotional scars and being together again for the first time in five years brings intense reactions. The passion and love they feel for one another have not diminished over the years and neither one is hesitant in expressing themselves, in public or not.

My Final Verdict: The author does an amazing job of creating a setting so rich and vibrant in color, sight and smell, it gives the reader a real sense of being there in the marketplace with Hannah and Sudesh, touching the fabrics, eating the food and hearing the hustle and bustle of the people all around. A big plate of chicken tikka masala and garlic naan would have complemented this story perfectly. I highly recommend One Night In New Delhi if you enjoy traveling to exotic locales in the books you read, want romance between the main characters to be white hot in sensuality and passion and are looking for a good story that features vibrant characters who are easy to connect with and relate to.

REVIEW: The Black Door by Charlotte Howard

Title: The Black Door
Author: Charlotte Howard
Publisher: Tirgearr Publishing
Publication Date: July, 2014
Genre: Erotica
Buy The Book: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Description: Imogen Pearce is a single mum of four children and fast approaching 40, she works at Ryedale Incorporated where she has to battle a younger and smarter generation to get to where she wants to go. If that means taking on the account of Cherry and Sean Rubin’s adult shop, then she will. But what happens when Imogen discovers the private club that they run at the back? And what happens when she realizes she knows quite a few members?

My Thoughts: Definitely need an ice bath after reading this one! Hoooo Wheee! This is not standard erotica smut, people. This one has a very good story about a woman on her own again trying to do what’s best for herself and her children in spite of catching her fucktard of a husband banging some bimbo. I enjoy stories featuring women who demonstrate inner strength, courage and spirit in spite of the shite the world throws at them. These women pick themselves up, grab life by the balls and get on with it. Maybe an office romance with the boss is not the best way to achieve personal independence, but Imogen could do a whole lot worse! I personally don’t think jumping into a rebound relationship is ever a good idea, but Cal Ryedale, could definitely be the exception to the rule!

He comes across as a jerk douchebag the first time we encounter him, but keep an open mind, folks, because it’s a façade. He gets under Imogen’s skin in a way that I doubt her husband ever did. Their mutual attraction sizzles right off the page which takes them from the conference room to an adult shop whose marketing Imogen is working on to the bedroom. Along the way, Imogen learns a lot about herself when deep and painful secrets are revealed. Every step of the way, Cal is right there for Imogen, offering his strength of body and soul.

My Final Verdict: I normally don’t go for the erotica genre because so many of them lack substance when it comes to a story and focus only on the sex. The Black Door provided both a great story starring characters with white-hot chemistry that just added to the buildup of the sexual tension they both feel for one another. I felt a lot of empathy and compassion for these characters and found them easy to relate to. I highly recommend The Black Door to readers who want a little more spice in the romance department without losing an entertaining story.

Upon their arrival to Luthsinia, Altarn receives news that an army has invaded Blindvar in her absence and blames Kaelin. Except it’s not Kaelin’s army, because she discovers Kaelin is in Luthsinia for the purpose of spying on her to take her land. And Torren is not who she thought he was.

Taking advantage of the unraveling situation, Kaelin kidnaps Altarn so he can take her state without her in the way and brings her to Ruidenthall. There’s a war ship on the horizon, led by a fallen angel craving mortal worship. Kaelin realizes he needs Altarn’s help to fight this army if he’s to save his state. She’s forced to agree, but how will she react when he’s wounded in battle? If she lets him die, can she fight the enemy on her own? Or if she saves his life, will he still try claiming her state, or try claiming her heart?

REVIEW: Twitter Girl by Nic Tatano

Title: Twitter Girl
Author: Nic Tatano
Publisher: Harper Impulse
Publication Date: September, 2014
Genre: Chick Lit
Buy The Book: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Description: Meet America’s Tweet-Heart.

She’s network reporter Cassidy Shea, better known as @TwitterGirl, with more than a million followers thanks to her sarcastic tweets. One hundred forty characters that can take anyone down a notch.

But while brevity may be the soul of wit, it can also get you fired.

When a controversial tweet goes viral the snarky redhead finds herself locked out of the career she loves… and watches her boyfriend take a hike.

Alas, no industry values sarcasm more than politics, and Cassidy becomes a marketable commodity for Presidential candidate Will Becker, a squeaky-clean, stone cold lock to be the next occupant of the White House. This candidate is unlike any other; he’s the country’s most eligible bachelor. He’s also looking for a running mate, and we’re not talking about a Vice President.

Twitter Girl has caught his eye.

Cassidy finds herself swept up in a whirlwind romance that turns her into the next Jackie Kennedy and becomes the favorite to be the next First Lady. The country can’t get enough of America’s First Couple… will Cassidy and Will Becker bring back Camelot?

But an anonymous tip triggers her journalistic curiosity. Is Will Becker all that he seems? The search for the answer teaches Cassidy the meaning of love.

My Thoughts: I really enjoyed this story and love the author’s ability to weave a story so entertaining, featuring characters so vivid and real, that the reader feels a connection to them on a personal level. When the story begins, Cassidy Shea has hit rock bottom in her career and her love life. As @TwitterGirl, she has amassed a following of more than a million people, but when one snarky tweet lands her in hot water, she finds herself without a job and a boyfriend. Nobody is more surprised than Cassidy when she is offered a position with the Presidential campaign team of Will Becker. The job is tailor-made for her, offering her special brand of snark and sarcasm directed at the other candidates. Along the way, she begins to develop feelings for the handsome widower candidate.

This story grabbed my attention fast and wouldn’t let go. I was unable to put the book down because I was so intrigued at what would happen next and not with just the blooming romance between Cassidy and Will. The secondary characters, Ripley, Sam and Tyler, were fascinating as well, each with their own personalities and stories that resonate with the reader without drawing them out of the main story.

Nic Tatano is quickly becoming one of my preferred go-to authors when I am in a chick-lit mood. He captures the humor and fun I crave from this genre flawlessly. I highly recommend this book and anything else written by this author if you are looking for an entertaining read that will make you laugh out loud and leave you with a smile on your face.

Title: Turbo Twenty-Three by Janet Evanovich
Description: In the heart of Trenton, N.J., a killer is out to make sure someone gets his just desserts.

Larry Virgil skipped out on his latest court date after he was arrested for hijacking an eighteen-wheeler full of premium bourbon. Fortunately for bounty hunter Stephanie Plum, Larry is just stupid enough to attempt almost the exact same crime again. Only this time he flees the scene, leaving behind a freezer truck loaded with Bogart ice cream and a dead body—frozen solid and covered in chocolate and chopped pecans.

As fate would have it, Stephanie’s mentor and occasional employer, Ranger, needs her to go undercover at the Bogart factory to find out who’s putting their employees on ice and sabotaging the business. It’s going to be hard for Stephanie to keep her hands off all that ice cream, and even harder for her to keep her hands off Ranger. It’s also going to be hard to explain to Trenton’s hottest cop, Joe Morelli, why she is spending late nights with Ranger, late nights with Lula and Randy Briggs—who are naked and afraid—and late nights keeping tabs on Grandma Mazur and her new fella. Stephanie Plum has a lot on her plate, but for a girl who claims to have “virtually no marketable skills,” these are the kinds of sweet assignments she does best.

REVIEW: All Shook Up by Chelsey Krause

Title: All Shook Up
Author: Chelsey Krause
Publisher: Tryst Books
Publication Date: August, 2016
Genre: Chick-Lit
Buy The Book: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Description: Natalie’s world is shaken to its core when she discovers an old photo of a woman who looks like her. Could this woman be related to her birth mother, who put Natalie up for adoption as a baby? When she tracks down the person who dumped the photo album at her thrift shop, she’s shaken again. Especially when the gorgeous fire-fighting guitarist offers to help her find the owner. They quickly become friends – which is all they’ll be, as far as Natalie’s concerned. Her rebellious youth turned her off cheating men, and the new Natalie is looking for true love and a family of her own – something Casey isn’t willing to provide. But how long can Natalie ignore her undeniable attraction to the man with the Irish accent and the broken-down ’57 Chevy?

In Chelsey Krause’s second novel, friends become lovers over a whirlwind summer of rockabilly rhythms, twirling skirts, and a mystery that takes them hilariously far out of their element.

My Thoughts: A fantastic story about a young woman’s search for her birth family and the love she finds on the journey. Natalie and Casey were fantastic characters. I loved the chemistry they have that is immediately obvious when they first meet. Casey’s flirtatious nature is a perfect match to Natalie’s grounded personality. When the reader learns about Natalie’s wild past, it adds more dimension to an already complex character. I loved his willingness to help her find her birth family and the easy level of comfort they have with one another is both sweet and sexy.

My Final Verdict: Chelsey Krause writes wonderful characters that are easy to relate to, empathize with and care about. The story is both fun and intriguing that keep the reader engaged and entertained. I highly recommend this story to readers looking for romance, laughter and friendship that blossom into love.

REVIEW: What A Lady Demands by Ashlyn Macnamara

Title: What A Lady Demands (The Eton Boys Trilogy #2)
Author: Ashlyn Macnamara
Publisher: Loveswept
Publication Date: November, 2014
Genre: Historical Romance
Buy The Book: Amazon | Barnes & Noble

Description: Viscount Lindenhurst cannot seem to find a governess who meets his impossible standards—until Cecelia Sanford becomes the first woman to interrupt the widower’s brooding in years. Lind had returned home from the Napoleonic wars, broken in body and soul and longing for his wife’s embrace, only to find her changed. Before they could reconcile, an accident struck their son and claimed her life. Now enter Cecelia, with her soft curves and sharp tongue—a tempting distraction, it is true, but not a welcome one.

Past the usual marrying age and haunted by a scandal of her own, Cecelia soon finds herself caring for both the child and the man. The viscount is brittle and even abrupt at times, yet she cannot deny the attraction that stirs her body in his presence. Moved by the deep sense of abandonment that tortures his soul, Cecelia aches to fully awaken Lind’s heart from its rancorous slumber—if she can just keep their pasts from destroying a second chance at love.

My Thoughts: The Eton Boys Trilogy continues with the story of Viscount Lindenhurst and Cecelia Sanford, who we first met in What A Lady Craves. Lind used to be the best friend of Alexander, the male protagonist of the first book and Cecelia is Alexander’s sister. This story stands alone, but I highly recommend you read the first book before this one to better understand the character’s history and events that occurred in the first book to bring you up to speed on this story.

I quite enjoyed this story even more than the first. I really connected to Lind and Cecelia and felt the chemistry between them was a perfect blend. They are both hiding deep and painful secrets and both feel unworthy of love. Lind hires Cecelia to be a governess for his young son. I found it interesting and disturbing that he refused to address his son by name. I found myself getting a little outraged on the child’s behalf….hello, his name is Jeremy! As more of Lind’s past is revealed, I felt more empathy for him and happily he redeems himself.

I really liked Cecelia’s spirit, determination and tenacity. She has no problem standing up to anyone to defend her beliefs. She is not a shy young girl who keeps her eyes downcast in the presence of the man who stirs her blood and makes her heart race. No, she looks him straight in the eye, boldly, without hesitation. I also enjoyed her connection with Jeremy. She refuses to let his reluctance to accept her in his life and instead views it as a challenge that she is determined to overcome.

The characters are well written with many layers that reveal more depth to their personalities. The story kept me engaged and entertained and curious to what was going to happen next. The author does a wonderful job of creating characters and an environment that the reader can easily connect to and feel comfortable in.

My Final Verdict: A wonderful sequel to a very good trilogy about second-chances at love, personal redemption, forgiveness and finally laying the demons of the past to rest. I highly recommend this trilogy and look forward to reading the third book.
