Description: Becca Hudson has come a long way since she was a tween starring in the sitcom Me Minus You, but as far as she’s concerned, she finally has her act together. She’s relocated to Leesburg, Virginia, owns a successful bakery, and has a great set of friends—even a friendly ex-husband.
She ignores “Whatever Happened To?” speculation and the occasional overly obsessed fan, and flatly turns down a lucrative offer to appear on a reality show called Celebrities in Peril: Child Star Edition. She has an uncomfortable relationship with her Hollywood past, preferring to think of herself as more than a 1990s trivia question. Then one day a mysterious man appears and stirs up her past—all of it—in ways she never imagined...
My Thoughts: Life Is Sweet by new to me author, Elizabeth Bass was an enjoyable story about a former Hollywood child star who is trying to leave the past behind her and live a life without the glitz, glamor and tabloids that follow celebrities. No matter how hard Becca tries to lead a quiet life, her past seems to follow her.
Becca agrees to compete on a reality show to raise money to help an elderly homeless man Becca has befriended. The author does a good job of creating characters that are easy for the reader to relate to and a story that flows smoothly, leaving the reader wanting more with the turning of each page.
My Final Verdict: I recommend this book to readers who enjoy a sweet story of love, acceptance, forgiveness and moving on.

Description: Jack and Jill meet on Freshers Big Party Night at university and for both of them it’s love at first sight. Despite their backgrounds, personalities and interests being poles apart, the relationship flourishes during their university years. It’s not quite as comfortable when their studies are over and they start work, Jack in the City and Jill as a teacher.
Way back when they first met, they’d shared the joke that their names were those of the nursery rhyme. Down the line, they fail to recognize that their lives are matching the plot – Jack falls down and Jill comes tumbling after.
Their relationship is on the rocks. Can it survive?
My Thoughts: An entertaining story by new to me author R.J. Gould about love found, love lost and love rediscovered. Jack and Jill meet at university and immediately fall head over heels for each other in what appears to be a solid relationship, despite their different backgrounds and personalities. As they finish university and begin their lives together, the reality of adult life of bills and responsibilities sets in and begins to fracture the relationship as they both make decisions that further damage the relationship beyond repair.
I enjoyed this story and liked both Jack and Jill immensely, flaws and all. Surprisingly, I never felt myself taking one side over the other. I thought these characters were written very realistically and easy to relate to. The plot kept me engaged throughout the entire story; my curiosity was quite high about what would happen and whether or not this couple could make their way back to one another. The road getting there was quite bumpy for them both and not without a few tumbles and falls.
My Final Verdict: Readers who enjoy the chick-lit genre overall will enjoy this offering by Mr. Gould. Witty and funny with several twists that keeps the story engaging and interesting.

Description: Young interior designer Ava O’Shea has an appointment for a first consultation at The Manor with the owner, Mr. Jesse Ward. She is expecting nothing more than an overweight, cravat wearing, well-to-do countryman, and on arrival, nothing would suggest otherwise. How wrong could she be? This Man is devastatingly handsome, charming and confident. He is also a conceited, hedonistic playboy, who knows no boundaries. Ava desperately does not want to be attracted to him, but she can’t control the overwhelming effect he has on her. Every instinct is telling her to run, so she does, but Jesse Ward is not so willing to let her go. He wants her and is determined to have her. She knows she is heading for heartbreak, but how can she run when he won’t let her?
My Thoughts: Well, whatever shock and surprise Ava had upon meeting Jesse Ward is nothing compared to how I felt when I met him. Where is my Jesse Ward? Yes, he’s damaged and broken, but I don’t care! The determination he possesses in his methodical pursuit and seduction of Ava had me shaking in my boots…oh wait, I don’t have any boots. The intense passion he demonstrates from the second he lays eyes on her is almost predatory. Show me a woman who doesn’t want a man to desire her like that and I will call her a liar to her face.
Ava wastes a lot of time trying to convince Jesse and herself she doesn’t want him. Girl, why even bother? You know you are going to lose this debate, so either go for it or get the hell out of the way. Of course, most women are hoping that Jesse has some redeemable qualities and can be “fixed”. Please don’t fix him. I like his bad boy naughtiness and wouldn’t change a thing about him.
My Final Verdict: This is the first installment and there are loose ends galore here, so I have to get book #2 so I can find out what happens next now that Ava has learned some things about Jesse and has her panties all in a twist. It's off to a good start, so if you want some heat and more heat in your reading, this is a good choice.

Genre: Mystery / Thriller

Description: When the daughter of a billionaire Hollywood director is found murdered after what appears to be a kidnapping gone wrong, Los Angeles Special Trials prosecutor Rachel Knight and Detective Bailey Keller find themselves at the epicenter of a combustible and high-profile court case. Then a prime suspect is revealed to be one of Hollywood's most popular and powerful talent managers--and best friend to the victim's father. With the director vouching for the manager's innocence, the Hollywood media machine commences an all-out war designed to discredit both Rachel and her case. KILLER AMBITION is at once a thrilling ride through the darker side of Tinseltown and a stunning courtroom drama with the brilliant insider's perspective that Marcia Clark is uniquely qualified to give.
My Thoughts: Killer Ambition by Marcia Clark is the third installment in the Rachel Knight series. One of my favorite things about this series is not that it’s a Rachel Knight series. No, Marcia Clark, does better and goes one step further by writing a series with several characters that the reader gets to know and bond with.
This story packs a punch right in the feels when Rachel and Bailey are brought in to investigate the murder of the daughter of a Hollywood mover and shaker after it appears she has been kidnapped. This story hit me hard because the victim is so young and it bothers me when life is snuffed out so needlessly, but even more so when the victim is young and has so much life to live. The story delivers a swift kick when the prime suspect of the murder turns out to be the best friend of the victim’s father. My first thought, was “with friends like this, who needs enemies?”
As more details about the case emerge and the Hollywood machine gets ugly, I was so impressed with how Rachel and her posse continue to persevere and dig for the truth and not take anything at face value.
My Final Verdict: This is an amazing series that I highly recommend reading in order. I truly hope there will be more Rachel Knight stories, though there appears to only be four at this time. Marcia Clark writes intriguing stories with characters that are easy to relate to and connect with.

Description: Nora Ephron meets Bridget Jones's Diary in Guardian columnist Stella Grey’s heartrendingly honest, witty memoir about her online odyssey to find real love in a virtual world.
Singers may croon about love being lovelier the second time around, but it can also be far more complicated. When Stella Grey’s husband leaves her for another woman, she fears she'll be unhappy and alone for the rest of her life. But daytime vodka-drinking and ice-cream are only short-term consolations. Realizing that she needs to take her future into her own hands, Stella dives into the world of online dating. What follow are 693 days of hilarious, depressing, and baffling encounters that unfold both in person and online. Stella quickly discovers that the more perfect a man appears on her screen, the warier she should be. It's a game of chance, with some players perfectly willing to lie to get what they want, whether that’s a lifetime of love or a very brief encounter.
Amid flirty emails, Skype chats, and awkward small talk over glasses of bad wine (which may or may not lead to awkward sex), Stella struggles to remain optimistic. To succeed, does she have to redefine the kind of man she’s looking for—or change the kind of woman she is? Funny, raw, and heartwarming, this book is a brutally honest account of the world of online dating—a world which so many of us are a part of, no matter our age—drawn from Stella’s hugely popular Guardian column, “Mid-life Ex-Wife” (and expanded with new material) about her search for a second chance at love.

Description: Cinderella meets Falling Down in this wickedly funny tale about having it all
Carol is perfect… at least that’s what everyone thinks. In reality she’s sinking fast – her family treats her like their personal assistant and her boyfriend is so busy with work that he’s got her single-handedly running their relationship. Not that her job is any easier. As the only woman on the bank’s trading floor she spends twelve-hour days trying not to get sworn at or felt up by colleagues who put the "W" in banker.
How long can she go on pleasing everyone else before she snaps and loses it all?
With humor and empathy, Perfect Girl lays bare the balancing act that working women face in a man's world
My Thoughts: Michele Gorman is one of my favorite authors in the chick-lit genre. Her stories and characters come alive with such bright, vibrant color, the reader feels a personal connection with the characters that is like being a participant in the story instead of a bystander.
I liked Carol immensely. She is easy to relate to with her intense desire to please everyone and though it bothered me how she is treated by the people in her life, she finds her courage and spine and comes out on top. In her shoes, I would probably be in jail facing homicide charges. It was easy for me to see a lot of myself in this story and I am sure other readers will have the same revelation.
I admired Carol for her strength of character and ability to remain sane while she is being pulled into so many different directions and then to top it off, she has to work for the boss from Hell who will throw her under the bus for his unethical behavior. She has a selfish mother and sister who think the world revolves around them and expect Carol to drop everything when they beckon and when Carol stands up for herself, the guilt trip is slathered on so thick, you could choke on it. Carol’s boyfriend, Ben, is a tool. He takes Carol for granted and expects her to make all the effort in the relationship. It’s a good thing he is a fictional character because when I found out just how much of a heel he turns out to be, I would have happily throttled him with my Kindle until he fell down and stopped moving.
My Final Verdict: If you are looking for a very good story about a woman who is a doormat, trying to be everything for everybody, but comes out on top, I highly recommend Perfect Girl by the very talented Michele Gorman. Don’t stop there. Just read all of her books…seriously.

Will they avoid the holiday season, as they usually do and spend it alone? Or, this year, just for a change, will Christmas catch up with them?

They say in order to find yourself you have to go home, but what if home is what you’re escaping from. I went to Miami to discover myself; never in my wildest dreams, did I think home would become a three-letter word.
I was the dream.
I was the illusion.
I was the fantasy.
Everything went to hell in a hand basket the moment we laid eyes on each other.
I wanted him.
He wanted me.
I have always been a man who made decisions based on other people’s feelings, wants, and desires.
I was selfless.
I never wanted to hurt anyone.
The moment I met her… I wanted her.
I loved her.
For the woman she was.
For the woman she wanted to be.
But most of all…
For the woman she was, when she was with me.
This isn’t a love story, but a story about love.

Description: Since her parents’ mysterious deaths many years ago, scientist Cora Sparks has spent her days in the safety of her university lab or at her Grandmother Etta’s dress shop. Tucked away on a winding Cambridge street, Etta’s charming tiny store appears quite ordinary to passersby, but the colorfully vibrant racks of beaded silks, delicate laces, and jewel-toned velvets hold bewitching secrets: With just a few stitches from Etta’s needle, these gorgeous gowns have the power to free a woman’s deepest desires.
Etta’s dearest wish is to work her magic on her granddaughter. Cora’s studious, unromantic eye has overlooked Walt, the shy bookseller who has been in love with her forever. Determined not to allow Cora to miss her chance at happiness, Etta sews a tiny stitch into Walt’s collar, hoping to give him the courage to confess his feelings to Cora. But magic spells—like true love—can go awry. After Walt is spurred into action, Etta realizes she’s set in motion a series of astonishing events that will transform Cora’s life in extraordinary and unexpected ways.
My Thoughts: An enjoyable story by new to me author Menna van Praag, The Dress Shop of Dreams could have used more magic to really knock my socks off. The magic that is referred to and inferred throughout this book really doesn’t have an impact on any of the characters and certainly not brought on by Etta. The magic of this story is that it resides within each of the characters and is up to them to reach for it and bring it to life within their lives.
This story is not a fast read. It’s very methodical and moves at a snail’s pace at times. Normally, that would annoy me, but with so many characters and their stories overlapping and intertwining with one another, if this book moved faster than it did, I would have been hopelessly lost.
Parts of this story made me laugh, made me cry and made me so angry I wanted to throw the Kindle against the wall in frustration. The magic awaiting all of the characters was a joy to behold and I had a hard time deciding which character was my favorite.
My Final Verdict: This is not a great book or what I would call “keeper-shelf”, but it was a good story that kept me engaged and interested in the characters and what would become of them all. I recommend this book to readers who have a curious nature about what will happen next.
