Remember When by Nora Roberts

Remember When by Nora Roberts

My Rating: 10 *'s

Description: Laine Tavish is an ordinary woman living an ordinary life in the small town of Angel's Gap, Maryland, as the proprietor of Remember When, an antique treasures and gift shop. At least, that's what everyone in Angel's Gap thinks. They have no idea that she used to be Elaine O'Hara, daughter of the notorious con man Big Jack O'Hara. Or that she grew up moving from place to place, one step ahead of the law....

Laine's past has just caught up with her, thought -- in a very dramatic way. Her long-lost uncle suddenly turned up in her shop, leaving only a cryptic warning before dying in the street, run down by a car. Soon afterward, her home is ransacked. Now it's up to Laine, and a sexy stranger named Max Gannon, to find out who's chasing her, and why.

The answer lies in a hidden fortune -- a fortune that will change not only Laine's life but also the lives of future generations. And danger and death will surround that fortune for years to come. Until New York City detective Lieutenant Eve Dallas gets the case.

A thrill- ride of a novel that blends present-day romance and futuristic suspense, REMEMBER WHEN is a tale of deceit and secrets, of strong women and fascinating men -- a brilliant combination of the incomparable talents of the two sides of Nora Roberts.

My Thoughts: A very intriguing tale where the past, present and future collide to solve a decades old jewel heist and the diamonds that were unrecovered. Eve is in top form as usual, though only a portion of the book features her, and Roark is fabulous as always. No Somerset this go round, but that's OK.

I liked Laine and Max in the present day and enjoyed seeing them again as well as the introduction of their granddaughter, Samantha in the future. The smoothness of the transition in time periods made me feel like a time traveler.

My only problem with this story was that there wasn't enough Eve and Roark, but then I can't have everything now can I?

Deep Midnight by Shannon Drake

Deep Midnight by Shannon Drake

My Rating: 7 *'s

Description: An opulent Carnivale ball in Venice takes a terrifying turn for book critic Jordan Riley. As festivity turns into frenzy, she is rescued by a powerful man disguised as a wolf. But was what she witnessed really just the evening's entertainment -- or something far more sinister?

From a deconsecrated church in Venice to a secret society in New Orleans, Jordan is led on a nightmare journey to the razor's edge of reality. Her mysterious savior is always a shadow behind her. A man whose closeness will both torment and tantalize her as darkness falls -- and an eternal hunger threatens to consume her.

My Thoughts: I liked Lucian's story better. Though this story takes place in Venice for the most part, I felt lost throughout the book and the ending did not bring any closure. I was left feeling unsure what the future holds for Jordan and Ragnor. I thought Raphael was a fantastic character and I enjoyed seeing Maggie, Sean, Lucian and Jade again, though the timeline between Lucian's book and this one is not clear. Hopefully, the next book in this series will bring some closure with Ragnor and Jordan.

Say Goodbye by Lisa Gardner

Say Goodbye by Lisa Gardner

My Rating: 9 *'s

Description: Come into my parlor...

For Kimberly Quincy, FBI Special Agent, it all starts with a pregnant hooker. The story Delilah Rose tells Kimberly about her johns is too horrifying to be true—but prostitutes are disappearing, one by one, with no explanation, and no one but Kimberly seems to care.

Said the spider to the fly...

As a member of the Evidence Recovery Team, dead hookers aren't exactly Kimberly's specialty. The young agent is five months pregnant—she has other things to worry about than an alleged lunatic who uses spiders to do his dirty work. But Kimberly's own mother and sister were victims of a serial killer. And now, without any bodies and with precious few clues, it's all too clear that a serial killer has found the key to the perfect murder... or Kimberly is chasing a crime that never happened.

Kimberly's caught in a web more lethal than any spider's, and the more she fights for answers, the more tightly she's trapped. What she doesn't know is that she's close—too close—to a psychopath who makes women's nightmares come alive, and if he has his twisted way, it won't be long before it's time for Kimberly to...say goodbye...

My Thoughts: Parts of the story were quite disturbing to read, especially the graphic detail about the spiders. The story kept me guessing to the end and I found the numerous twists and turns in the plot very intriguing. Loved seeing Rainey and Quincy again, though they appear in the last third of the story and are very minor characters. I hope there will be more stories in this series. The story jumps between the past and the present and it was a little confusing trying to keep the villains straight, but it worked out really well and the epilogue ties up all loose ends nicely.

The Outlaw Demon Wails by Kim Harrison

The Outlaw Demon Wails by Kim Harrison

My Rating: 10 *'s

Description: To save the lives of her friends, Rachel did the unthinkable: she willingly trafficked in forbidden demon magic. And now her sins are coming home to haunt her.

As Rachel searches for the truth behind a terrifying murder, an even greater menace threatens, for the demon Algaliarept will stop at nothing to claim her, and the discovery of a shocking family secret throws Rachel's entire life into question. If she is ever to live free, Rachel must first walk willingly into the demonic ever-after in search of long-lost ancient knowledge.

But when you dance with demons, you lay your soul on the line . . . and there are some lines that should never be crossed.

My Thoughts: This series is getting much more sinister and dark as we learn more about Rachel's abilities as well as her past and the lengths she will go to help the people she cares about. I love the way Kim Harrison breathes life into all of the characters giving them all such unique personalities. I cannot get enough of Jenks and hope his character remains throughout the series.

New Additions To The TBR Pile In March

OK, considering I'm supposed to move this summer, you would think I would stop adding to my TBR pile, but obviously that's not happening. LOL Guess I will be investing in several rubbermaid bins...

Wait Till Your Vampire Gets Home by Michele Bardsley

Description: Undead fathers really know best...

It's one thing to date a single father with emotional baggage...but quite another to date one who's dead.

I never expected to fall in lust, but sexy vamire Ralph Genessa is too irresistible. The fact that he's the loving father of twin boys drives the nail into my coffin and wins my undying love. And you know what they say: Home is where the heart is. Only this town is being torn in two by a war between the undead, and I may be the only thing that can hold Broken Heart together.

The Trophy Wives Club by Kristin Billerbeck

Description: A novel of fakes, faith, and a love that lasts forever...

BECAUSE SOMETIMES PRINCE CHARMING ISN'T...

Haley's role as an L.A. princess is canceled when her producer husband finds someone younger for the part.

Haley Cutler is the consummate trophy wife. Perhaps was is the more accurate term. Haley married Prince Charming when she was only twenty --- back in the day when highlights came from an afternoon at the beach, not three hours in the salon.

Unfortunately, after seven years as Jay Cutler's wife, a role that provided significance and what she thought was love, Jay walks out, and Haley finds herself with few life skills that translate to the real world, not to mention a sense of amnesia about who she used to be. But before Haley can find her way, she must meet with Jay's lawyer, the strikingly handsome Hamilton Lowe. Although she can't stand his self-righteous contempt for her divorce, she takes his suggestion to attend a group at his church called "The Trophy Wives Club," a Bible study composed of women who have been dealt a raw deal. Haley's never been into the whole Jesus thing but could really use some friends to walk her through this phase (how do you apply for a credit card anyway?).

As Haley begins to realize that she really can stand on her own two feet, she also learns that sometimes in losing we find the real reward...

The Next Thing On My List by Jill Smolinski

Description: After a car accident in which her passenger, Marissa, dies, June Parker finds herself in possession of a list Marissa has written: “20 Things to Do by My 25th Birthday.” The tasks range from inspiring (run a 5K) to daring (go braless) to near-impossible (change someone’s life).

To assuage her guilt, June races to achieve each goal herself before the deadline, learning more about her own life than she ever bargained for.

The Department Of Lost & Found by Allison Winn Scotch

Description: In this hopeful, humorous, and astonishingly deft debut, Allison Winn Scotch explores what happens when a young woman thinks she's lost everything that matters—and ends up discovering what's truly important. This is a novel that will leave you taking stock of what's important in your own life . . . and never letting it go.

It didn't start out as the worst day of Natalie Miller's life. At thirty, she is moving up the political ladder, driven by raw ambition and ruthless determination. As the top aide to New York's powerful female senator, she works hard, stays late, and enjoys every bit of it, even if the bills she's pushing through do little to improve the lives of the senator's constituents. And if her boyfriend isn't the sexiest guy alive, at least he's a warm body to come home to.

Then he announces he's leaving. But that news is barely a blip compared to what Natalie's doctor tells her: She has breast cancer. And she can't cure it by merely being headstrong. Now the life Natalie must change is her own.

All her energy, what little of it she has left, must go into saving herself from a merciless disease. So when she's not lying on the sofa recovering from her treatments and indulging in a curious addiction to The Price Is Right, she realizes it's time to take a hard look at her choices. She begins by tracking down the five loves-of-her-life to assess what went wrong. Along the way, she questions her relationships with her friends, her parents, her colleagues, the one who got away, and, most important, with herself: Why is she so busy moving through life that she never stops to embrace it?

As Natalie sleuths out the answers to these questions, her journey of self-discovery takes her down new paths and to unexplored places. And she learns that sometimes when life is at its most unexpected, it's not what you lose that makes you who you are . . . it's what you find.

P Is For Peril by Sue Grafton

Description: Dr. Dowan Purcell had been missing for nine weeks when Kinsey got a call asking her to take on the case. A specialist in geriatric medicine, Purcell was a prominent member of the Santa Teresa medical community, and the police had done a thorough job. Purcell had no known enemies and seemed contented with his life. At the time of his disappearance, he was running a nursing care facility where both the staff and the patients loved him. He adored his second wife, Crystal, and doted on their two-year-old son.

It wasn't Crystal who called Kinsey. It was Purcell's ex-wife, Fiona. Everything about their meeting made Kinsey uneasy. Fiona's manner was high-handed and her expectations unrealistic. Kinsey's instincts told her to refuse the job, yet she ended up saying, "I'll do what I can, but I make no promises."

It was a decision she'd live to regret.

Pursuing the mysterious disappearance of Purcell, Kinsey crashes into a wall of speculation. It seems everyone has a theory. The cops think he went on a bender and is too ashamed to come home. Fiona is sure he ran off to get away from Crystal, and Crystal is just as sure he's dead. The staff at the nursing home is convinced he's been kidnapped, and one of his daughters, having consulted a psychic, is certain that he's trapped in a dark place, though she doesn't know where. Kinsey is awash in explanations and sorely lacking in facts. Then pure chance leads her in another direction, and she soon finds herself in a dangerous shadow land, where duplicity and double-dealing are the reality and, with the truth glinting elusively out of reach, she must stake her life on a thin tread of intuition.

My Thoughts: This story seemed to twist and turn in the most confusing and convoluted ways to the point that I'm not sure what happened. There were multiple sub-plots so it was hard to focus on what was the main point of the story. Definitely not Kinsey's best adventure...
