Title: Angels Fall
Author: Nora Roberts
Publisher: Putnam
Publication Date: July, 2006
Genre: Romantic Suspense
Description: Angels Fall by Nora Roberts introduces us to a young woman named Reece Gilmore who is on the run from her past, avoiding her present and dreading her future. After a near death experience that resulted in the deaths of many people she cared about, Reece has been on the road trying to find peace from the nightmares, panic and anxiety attacks that are a part of her life now. Car trouble lands her in a small mountain town in Wyoming so she decides to take a temporary job until she can raise enough money to fix her car and get back on the road. During a hike one day, Reece witnesses what she believes are a man and a woman fighting resulting in the man killing the woman. Unfortunately, there is no evidence to suggest a crime has been committed and she has a hard time convincing law enforcement officials. With the exception of one man, nobody in town is inclined to believe her as Reece has a reputation for being fragile and a little jumpy. With the assistance of Brody, Reece tries to find out the identity of the unknown woman while the killer is coming closer to her and determined to make sure nobody finds out.
My Thoughts: This wasn’t the best by Nora Roberts in terms of her standard romantic suspense titles, but I did enjoy the story. I thought Reece was a likeable character and once I learned why she was so jittery and tense, I felt a lot of empathy for her. She came across as a very believable character, having experienced what she went through in her previous life and I thought she was very brave for taking charge of her life and trying new experiences, despite her anxiety. I liked Brody immediately and didn’t let his gruff exterior fool me. Reece’s boss, Joanie and coworker, Linda Gail were wonderful supporting characters. The story flowed well, but was a little predictable, especially when the killer started stalking Reece, trying to make her think she was going crazy. I guessed early on who the killer was, but enjoyed finding out why he did it at the end.
My Final Verdict: Overall, this was a good story and fans of Nora Roberts and romantic suspense stories will enjoy it, but may not be blown away by it.

REVIEW: Tweethearts by Nicole Haddow
Title: Tweethearts
Author: Nicole Haddow
Publisher: Destiny Romance
Publication Date: February, 2014
Genre: Chick-Lit
Description: Jemima Starler loathes her job writing for the pregnancy magazine Placenta Monthly. To break the monotony, she writes scandalous tweets about the magazine industry as her secret online identity, Maghag. Thankfully, she also has her cute and talented housemate, Samson, to keep life interesting. When her editor stoops to a new ethical low, Jemima's reputation is suddenly on the line. She must find a way to carve out a new career, but it's hard to focus when Samson's mixed signals are driving her crazy. And when her handsome housemate is plucked from obscurity to star on a new reality TV show, everything changes. It's time for Jemima to trust her feelings instead of believing what she sees online, but has she missed her chance?
My Thoughts: With Tweethearts, new to me author Nicole Haddow introduces the reader to Jemima Starler, a girl we can all relate to. She hates her job and has a massive crush on her housemate, Samson. She writes articles for pregnancy magazine Placenta Monthly and if that isn't bad enough, her boss is a tyrant and a bully. To make her work life more bearable, Jemima posts snarky and scandalous tweets about the magazine industry under a secret Twitter identity, Maghag. Of course, she has acquired a massive following and everyone is dying to know who Maghag really is.
When a popular actress finds herself pregnant and unmarried, Jemima is given an exclusive but her unethical editor turns the article into a sordid piece that not only causes scandal for the actress, but calls Jemima's integrity into question and forces her into a career change.
Jemima's prospects seem a little dark until her housemate is selected to appear on the reality television show Dance Like No One's Watching. Jemima lands a position on the show as the social media director, but is forbidden from associating with Samson. Things get interesting when the show's director decides to market Samson in a faux on-stage romance with another contestant.
I really enjoyed this story. The multiple character story plots were easy to follow and I really liked most of the characters. Jemima's boss at the magazine, Jemima's sister and Samson's co-contestant, Lottie were less than likeable, but a reader learns to accept the nasty characters as part of the hero/heroine's journey to their happily ever after.
I also enjoyed the use of Twitter and social media in general as a backdrop for this story. In today's digital age, Jemima's recognition and use of Twitter and social media was spot on and relevant.
My Final Verdict: If you are looking for a light summertime read that has interesting characters and story, I highly recommend you give Tweethearts a try. I will be looking for more titles by Ms. Haddow when I am craving something tweet.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of Tweethearts from the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

New Additions To The TBR Pile In May
I have completed 48% of my 2014 Reading Challenge. At my current pace, I am 3 books ahead of schedule and 70% done with my current read. It's still early, but I am more hopeful this year of completing my goal than I have been in previous years.
Many new review requests arrived in May that I am looking forward to reading.
Title: Cop Town by Karin Slaughter
Description: Karin Slaughter, author of the New York Times bestselling Will Trent novels, is widely acclaimed as “one of the best crime novelists in America” (The Washington Post). Now she delivers her first stand-alone novel: an epic story of a city in the midst of seismic upheaval, a serial killer targeting cops, and a divided police force tasked with bringing a madman to justice.
Atlanta, 1974: As a brutal murder and a furious manhunt rock the city’s police department, Kate Murphy wonders if her first day on the job will also be her last. She’s determined to defy her privileged background by making her own way—wearing a badge and carrying a gun. But for a beautiful young woman, life will be anything but easy in the macho world of the Atlanta PD, where even the female cops have little mercy for rookies. It’s also the worst day possible to start given that a beloved cop has been gunned down, his brothers in blue are out for blood, and the city is on the edge of war.
Kate isn’t the only woman on the force who’s feeling the heat. Maggie Lawson followed her uncle and brother into the ranks to prove her worth in their cynical eyes. When she and Kate, her new partner, are pushed out of the citywide search for a cop killer, their fury, pain, and pride finally reach the boiling point. With a killer poised to strike again, they will pursue their own line of investigation, risking everything as they venture into the city’s darkest heart.
Relentlessly paced, acutely observed, wickedly funny, and often heartbreaking, Cop Town is Karin Slaughter’s most powerful novel yet—a tour de force of storytelling from our foremost master of character, atmosphere, and suspense.
Title: Stay Close by Harlan Coben
Description: Megan is a suburban soccer mom who once upon a time walked on the wild side. Now she’s got two kids, a perfect husband, a picket fence, and a growing sense of dissatisfaction. Ray used to be a talented documentary photographer, but at age forty he finds himself in a dead-end job posing as a paparazzo pandering to celebrity-obsessed rich kids. Jack is a detective who can’t let go of a cold case—a local husband and father disappeared seventeen years ago, and Jack spends the anniversary every year visiting a house frozen in time, the missing man’s family still waiting, his slippers left by the recliner as if he might show up any moment to step into them. Three people living lives they never wanted, hiding secrets that even those closest to them would never suspect, will find that the past doesn’t recede. Even as the terrible consequences of long-ago events crash together in the present and threaten to ruin lives, they will come to the startling realization that they may not want to forget the past at all. And as each confronts the dark side of the American Dream—the boredom of a nice suburban life, the excitement of temptation, the desperation and hunger that can lurk behind even the prettiest facades—they will discover the hard truth that the line between one kind of life and another can be as whisper-thin as a heartbeat.
With his trademark combination of page-turning thrills and unrivaled insight into the dark shadows that creep into even the happiest communities, Harlan Coben delivers a thriller that cements his status as the master of domestic suspense.
Title: Bound To The Highlander by Kate Robbins
Description: Aileana Chattan suffers a devastating loss, then discovers she is to wed neighboring chief and baron, James MacIntosh -- a man she despises and whose loyalty deprived her of the father she loved. Despite him and his traitorous clan, Aileana will do her duty, but she doesn't have to like it or him. But when the MacIntosh awakens something inside her so absolute and consuming, she is forced to question everything.
James MacIntosh is a nobleman torn between tradition and progress. He must make a sacrifice if he is to help Scotland move forward as a unified country. Forced to sign a marriage contract years earlier binding Lady Aileana to him, James must find a way to break it, or risk losing all -- including his heart.
From the wild and rugged Highlands near Inverness to the dungeons of Edinburgh Castle, James and Aileana’s preconceptions of honor, duty and love are challenged at every adventurous turn.
Title: Promised To The Highlander by Kate Robbins
Description: Nessia Stephenson's world was safe until a threat from a neighbouring clan forces her to accept a betrothal to a man whose family can offer her the protection she needs. The real threat lies in her intense attraction to the man who arranged the match—the clan's chief and her intended’s brother, Fergus MacKay.
When powerful warlord Fergus MacKay arranges a marriage for his younger brother, William, he has no idea the price will be his own heart. Fergus is captivated by the wildly beautiful Nessia, a woman he can never have.
When the feud between the MacKay and Sutherland clans escalates, Nessia, William, and Fergus all must make sacrifices for their future. Longing and loss, honour and duty. How can love triumph under such desperate circumstances?
Title: Leaving The Pack by David J. O'Brien
Description: Nobody believes in werewolves.
That's just what Paul McHew and his friends are counting on.
They and their kind roam our city streets: a race of people from whom the terrible legend stems; now living among us invisibly after centuries of persecution through fear and ignorance. Superficially Caucasian but physiologically very different, with lunar rhythms so strong that during the three days of the full moon they are almost completely controlled by their hormonal instincts, you might have cursed them as just another group of brawling youths or drunken gang-bangers. Now at the point of extinction, if they are to survive their existence must remain restricted to mere stories and legend, but, paradoxically, they also must marry outside their society in order to persist.
The responsibility for negotiating this knife-edge is given to Paul, who runs the streets with his friends during the full moon, keeping them out of real trouble and its resultant difficult questions. Having succeeded for years, he finds his real test of leadership comes when he meets Susan, a potential life-mate, to whom he will have to reveal his true identity if he is ever to leave his pack.
Title: Angels Fall by Nora Roberts
Description: #1 New York Times-bestselling author Nora Roberts explores the wilds of the Grand Tetons-and the mysteries of love, murder, and madness-in her engrossing and passionate new novel.
Reece Gilmore has come a long way to see the stunning view below her. As the sole survivor of a brutal crime back East, she has been on the run, desperately fighting the nightmares and panic attacks that haunt her. Reece settles in Angel's Fist, Wyoming-temporarily, at least-and takes a job at a local diner. And now she's hiked this mountain all by herself. It was glorious, she thought, as she peered through her binoculars at the Snake River churning below.
Then Reece saw the man and woman on the opposite bank. Arguing. Fighting. And suddenly, the man was on top of the woman, his hands around her throat . . .
Enjoying a moment of solitude a bit farther down the trail is a gruff loner named Brody. But by the time Reece reaches him and brings him to the scene, the pair has vanished. When authorities comb the area where she saw the attack, they find nothing. No signs of struggle. No freshly turned earth. Not even a tire track.
And no one in Angel's Fist seems to believe her. After all, she's a newcomer in town, with a reputation for being jumpy and jittery-maybe even a little fragile. Maybe it's time to run again, to move on . . .
Reece Gilmore knows there's a killer in Angel's Fist, even if Brody, despite his seeming impatience and desire to keep her at arm's length, is the only one willing to believe her. When a series of menacing events makes it clear that someone wants her out of the way, Reece must put her trust in Brody-and herself-to find out if there is a killer in Angel's Fist before it's too late.

REVIEW: Never Google Heartbreak by Emma Garcia
Title: Never Google Heartbreak
Author: Emma Garcia
Publisher: Hodder & Stoughton
Publication Date: March, 2013
Genre: Chick-Lit
Description: When her fiancé Rob breaks off their engagement for the third time, Viv does what any girl would do - she Googles heartbreak.
Confronted by tales of misery, she decides to set-up her own self-help website for the broken-hearted. But as Viv passes through the three essential stages of grief (denial, vodka, disastrous haircut), she becomes determined that it's not too late to try and get Rob back.
When things get out of hand after a drunken declaration of love at an extremely inappropriate moment, Viv's scruffy, tequila-swilling best friend Max is there to pick up the pieces. Viv starts to realise that maybe the real thing has been under her nose all this time, and now - one ex and a massive error of judgement later - she has to face the question:
What's the craziest thing you'll do for love?
My Thoughts: With Never Google Heartbreak, the readers are introduced to a woman who is so wrapped up in her heartbreak over what she lost, she doesn’t see the possibilities of happiness that is right in front of her. She represents what most women go through after a breakup, but in Vivienne’s case, her focus borders almost on desperation. I could completely understand where she was coming from but found myself getting annoyed with her for the lengths she was going to win back her douche-bag of an ex.
Vivienne’s best friend, Max Kelly isn’t typical leading man material. He’s a starving artist who doesn’t appear to have a lot of ambition. What made him stand out in my mind was his willingness to be there for Vivienne, always picking up the pieces and he has been in love with her for a very long time.
I liked the story but struggled with the direction Vivienne’s focus was taking her. The website she creates as a self-help for other broken-hearted people seems to be an afterthought. Her career seems to be going nowhere either. Vivienne’s actions nearly cost her not only her best friend but the love of her life. For me, too much time was spent focusing on Vivienne’s attempts to correct her mistakes, only for the story to end with a major cliffhanger.
My Final Verdict: Overall, this is a good story that fans of chick-lit will enjoy. I don’t care for cliffhanger plot devices, but some readers will enjoy the ride.

REVIEW: Thankless In Death by J.D. Robb
Title: Thankless In Death (In Death, #37)
Author: J.D. Robb
Publisher: Putnam Adult
Publication Date: September, 2013
Genre: Thriller / Mystery
Description: In the latest suspense thriller in the #1 New York Times bestselling series, the year 2060 is drawing to a close in New York City and loved ones are coming together for Thanksgiving. But sometimes the deepest hatreds seethe within the closest relationships, and blood flows faster than water…
Lieutenant Eve Dallas has plenty to be grateful for this season. Hosting Roarke’s big Irish family for the holiday may be challenging, but it’s a joyful improvement on her own dark childhood.
Other couples aren’t as lucky as Eve and Roarke. The Reinholds, for example, are lying in their home stabbed and bludgeoned almost beyond recognition. Those who knew them are stunned—and heartbroken by the evidence that they were murdered by their own son. Twenty-six-year-old Jerry hadn’t made a great impression on the bosses who fired him or the girlfriend who dumped him—but they didn’t think he was capable of this.
Turns out Jerry is not only capable of brutality but taking a liking to it. With the money he’s stolen from his parents and a long list of grievances, he intends to finally make his mark on the world. Eve and her team already know the who, how, and why of this murder. What they need to pinpoint is where Jerry’s going to strike next.
My Thoughts: In comparison to the rest of the In Death series, this one comes off as very mild. Between the Thanksgiving preparations for Roark’s family’s arrival from Ireland and Lt. Dallas’s investigation into a murder spree being perpetrated by someone Eve identifies early on, everything is fairly predictable. But I still thoroughly enjoyed it.
As far as villains go, Jerry Reinhold is pretty lame. He leaves his crime scenes with so much obvious evidence that he could have just left a note saying he did it. What made the story interesting was how long he managed to stay just a few steps ahead of Lt. Dallas and the Scooby gang.
The best part of this story that I really enjoyed are the scenes involving Roark’s family, especially the football match in the front yard. The commendation ceremony was a wonderful addition too. As always, the interactions between Dallas and Peabody are a hoot, especially when it involves girly things.
Some things I missed not having in this story were major fights with Summerset, no major interactions with Mavis and Bella. No Trina either, much to my disappointment. Peabody and McNab were a lot tamer too, unfortunately.
My Final Verdict: Although many of the elements from this series that I have come to love and expect were not in this story and it is much tamer than previous installments, I still really enjoyed it. I love seeing Eve and Roark evolve both as a married couple and as professional partners working cases together. Their chemistry and banter get better with each book. I would really like to see some character development with Summerset; perhaps a romance for him, even. That could be a lot of fun. I highly recommend this book and the entire series to fans of romantic suspense and police procedural thrillers. The plots and characters draw the reader into their world for a visit and make it very hard for the reader to ever want to leave.

REVIEW: The Harlow Hoyden by Lynn Messina
Title: The Harlow Hoyden: A Regency Romance
Author: Lynn Messina
Publisher: Potatoworks Press
Publication Date: February, 2014
Genre: Regency Romance
Description: Miss Emma Harlow hasn’t earned the reputation as a hoyden for nothing, so when the Duke of Trent discovers her in his conservatory stealing one of his orchids, he’s isn’t surprised—charmed, delighted and puzzled, yes, but not surprised. It is Emma who is amazed. She has naturally concluded that the man reading in the conservatory must be the country cousin (who else in London would actually read?) and is quite vexed to discover that he is the Duke of Trent himself—imagine, stealing the duke’s prize Rhyncholaelia digbyana under his very nose!
But her vexation doesn’t last long. For Emma is a practical young lady with a mission: to end her dear sister Lavinia’s engagement to the villainous (and dreadfully dull!) Sir Waldo Windbourne, and she thinks that the famous libertine is just the man for the job. If he would only seduce her sister away from Sir Waldo…. Well, not seduce exactly, but flirt mercilessly and engage her interest. Perhaps then Lavinia would jilt the baron. The Duke of Trent is resistant, of course. Despite his reputation, he does not toy with the affections of innocents. And besides, it’s not her sister he longs to seduce.
My Thoughts: I became familiar with Lynn Messina’s writing when I read one of her chick-lit titles in the Red Dress Ink line. In addition to chick-lit, Ms. Messina also has young adult, fantasy, paranormal and historical romance in her repertoire. The Harlow Hoyden is a historical romance set in the regency period featuring Emma Harlow, a woman who lives by her own set of rules and refuses to bow down to the expectations of society. She enlists the assistance of The Duke of Trent to break up her twin sister Lavinia’s engagement to the odious Sir Waldo the Windbag. Her plan is simple…he will draw Lavinia’s attention away from her fiancĂ© in the hopes that she will develop feelings for The Duke and call off her engagement. Emma is convinced that Sir Waldo is a villain and cannot stand the idea of her beloved twin ruining her life. What happens next is a madcap adventure that has Emma breaking into Waldo’s home, dancing the waltz and chasing down traitorous spies, with The Duke of Trent either by her side or close on her heels.
I really enjoyed this story. Emma is a breath of fresh air and I liked her immensely. She’s daring and direct and refuses to let society or her family dictate to her how a proper lady should behave. She has been given the nickname The Harlow Hoyden because she walks a fine line between propriety and scandal and she could care less. She has no interest in marriage or making a suitable match and prefers to live her life as she sees fit. Whether she is stealing a prized orchid from The Duke’s conservatory or proposing outlandish schemes to break up her sister’s engagement, she does so with a gusto and headstrong determination that would make most people cringe in horror. There are a few moments in the book that made me wonder if Emma’s actions are too rash, but quickly remembered that is why she earned her moniker.
I thought The Duke was an excellent character and the perfect match for Emma. This period in time usually depicts men being in charge and viewed as complete masters of the universe. I enjoyed seeing The Duke agreeing to help Emma thinking he would be able to deter her, not realizing who is really in charge. Emma’s twin and her brother and his wife were also likeable characters. I am hoping that Lavinia will get her own story in the future.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of The Harlow Hoyden from the author in exchange for an honest review.
My Final Verdict: Overall, fans of historical romance will enjoy this offering and if you are not a fan of historical romance, but enjoy a fun and adventurous story with strong characters and witty dialogue, where villains are vanquished and good triumphs over bad, give this one a try.

New Additions To The TBR Pile In April
Many new review requests arrived in April that I am quite tickled to receive. On a happy note, I have completed 45% so far of my reading goal for this year. At my current pace, I am about 4 books ahead of schedule. Yay Me! In no particular order, here are the new additions to my reading family...
Title: Just In Case by Chrissie Manby
Description: Never were there two less similar identical twins than Clare and Rosie Marwood. Though they were born within three minutes of each other and spent their childhoods dressed in matching outfits, they’ve grown up to have less in common than Kim Kardashian and the Duchess of Cambridge.
So both women are horrified when a luggage mix-up means that sensible Clare must attend a company conference in the United States with Rosie’s suitcase full of pink, frills and stripper heels, while flamboyant Rosie heads for a friend’s destination wedding in Italy's Tuscany with Clare’s case full of suiting and sensible courts. Both believe wearing the other’s clothes is going to ruin their chances: Clare’s of getting a promotion and Rosie’s of getting a snog. But as three days of literally having to walk in each other’s shoes unfold, will the sisters discover they should try to be more like each other after all?
This exclusive new novella (short novel at around 100 pages) by Chrissie Manby explores sisterhood, identity and love in a thoroughly summery way.
Title: Love And Shenanigans by Zara Keane

When she discovers the drunken vows she exchanged with the groom during a wild Las Vegas trip eight years previously mean they’re legally married, her future plans ricochet out of control. Can she untangle herself from the man who broke her heart so long ago? Does she even want to?
Gavin Maguire’s life is low on drama, high on stability, and free of pets. But Gavin hadn’t reckoned on Fiona blasting back into his life and crashing his wedding. In the space of twenty-four hours, he loses a fiancĂ©e and a job, and gains a wife and a labradoodle. Can he salvage his bland-but-stable life? More importantly, can he resist losing his heart to Fiona all over again?
Title: Thankless In Death by J.D. Robb

REVIEW: The Burning by Jane Casey
Title: The Burning (Maeve Kerrigan #1)
Author: Jane Casey
Publisher: Minotaur Books
Publication Date: September, 2011
Genre: Mystery
Description: A determined young police constable goes it alone against an enigmatic killer and her bosses in a series debut for fans of Sophie Hannah and Tana French.
The Burning Man. It’s the name the media has given a brutal murderer who has beaten four young women to death before setting their bodies ablaze in secluded areas of London’s parks. And now there’s a fifth.
Maeve Kerrigan is an ambitious detective constable, keen to make her mark on the murder task force. Her male colleagues believe Maeve’s empathy makes her weak, but the more she learns about the latest victim, Rebecca Haworth, from her grieving friends and family, the more determined Maeve becomes to bring her murderer to justice. But how do you catch a killer no one has seen when so much of the evidence has gone up in smoke?
Maeve’s frenetic hunt for a killer in Jane Casey’s gripping series debut will entrance even the most jaded suspense readers.
My Thoughts: New to me author Jane Casey brings to life a character I found very likeable and easy to relate to in Maeve Kerrigan. As a detective constable working in dominantly male squad, Maeve tries to ignore inappropriate comments and innuendo she overhears within her squad. She strives to prove herself worthy to her chain of command by trying to be the best investigator she can be. In addition, her dedication to her job puts a strain on her personal relationships with her family and boyfriend.
At the height of The Burning Man serial killer investigations, a new homicide brings more questions instead of answers. The more Maeve learns about the latest victim causes Maeve to wonder if the crime is being perpetrated by the same suspect or if a new monster is loose in London.
I really enjoyed the premise of the story and the way the plot is peppered with multiple layers that reveal the victim’s dark past and events that led to her death. The big reveal came as a great surprise to me. The author does an excellent job of tying all of the loose ends together to make the finale more believable.
My Final Verdict: Overall, I found The Burning to be a very good beginning to what, I believe, will be a series that will appeal to fans of mysteries and police procedural novels. This series has characters that the reader will enjoy meeting, getting to know and caring for. I enjoyed the passion that Maeve brings to her job and the justice she seeks for her victims. I look forward to the next book in this series.

REVIEW: Into The Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes
Title: Into The Darkest Corner
Author: Elizabeth Haynes
Publisher: Harper
Publication Date: June, 2012
Genre: Thriller
Description: Catherine has been enjoying the single life for long enough to know a good catch when she sees one. Gorgeous, charismatic, spontaneous - Lee seems almost too perfect to be true. And her friends clearly agree, as each in turn falls under his spell. But there is a darker side to Lee. His erratic, controlling and sometimes frightening behavior means that Catherine is increasingly isolated. Driven into the darkest corner of her world, and trusting no one, she plans a meticulous escape. Four years later, struggling to overcome her demons, Catherine dares to believe she might be safe from harm. Until one phone call changes everything. This is an edgy and powerful first novel, utterly convincing in its portrayal of obsession, and a tour de force of suspense.
My Thoughts: For me, a good thriller novel combines the elements of suspense and intrigue to a level of intensity that the reader can empathize fully with the characters and what they are experiencing. New to me author Elizabeth Haynes weaves a tale of fear and obsession that leaves deep physical, mental and emotional scars in the life of Catherine Bailey.
The story alternates between two time periods in Catherine’s life. The first is centered on her relationship with Lee and the escalating abuse at his hands. The second is four years later with Catherine living and coping with a severe obsessive compulsive disorder and living in fear of Lee’s release from prison.
Initially, I found the switch in time periods a little confusing to understand, but as I read more, I began to understand the parallels in Cathy’s life. I enjoyed seeing her go from a victim living in constant fear trying to plan her escape to a woman who takes charge of her circumstances to regain her life and power.
My Final Verdict: Fair warning to the reader…some of the events were a little disturbing and difficult to get through, but the outcome made the anxiety easier to bear. I highly recommend this story to readers who enjoy high suspense and intensity featuring characters you can relate to and root for to find a happy ending.

New Additions To The TBR Pile In March
March saw the arrival of several titles to review at The Bookworm News & Reviews. Spring is going to be a very busy time, I think. :)
Title: Broken Hearts, Fences And Other Things To Mend by Katie Finn
Description: Summer, boys, and friendships gone sour. This new series has everything that perfect beach reads are made of!
Gemma just got dumped and is devastated. She finds herself back in the Hamptons for the summer—which puts her at risk of bumping into Hallie, her former best friend that she wronged five years earlier. Do people hold grudges that long?
When a small case of mistaken identity causes everyone, including Hallie and her dreamy brother Josh, to think she’s someone else, Gemma decides to go along with it.
Gemma's plan is working (she's finding it hard to resist Josh), but she's finding herself in embarrassing situations (how could a bathing suit fall apart like that!?). Is it coincidence or is someone trying to expose her true identity? And how will Josh react if he finds out who she is?
Title: Dog Gone, Back Soon by Nick Trout
Description: When Dr. Cyrus Mills returned home after inheriting his estranged father's veterinary practice, The Bedside Manor for Sick Animals, the last thing he wanted was to stay in Eden Falls, Vermont, a moment longer than absolutely necessary. However, the previously reclusive veterinarian pathologist quickly found that he actually enjoyed treating animals and getting to know the eccentric residents of the tiny provincial town-especially an alluring waitress named Amy.
So Cyrus is now determined to make Bedside Manor thrive. Not an easy goal, given that Healthy Paws, the national veterinary chain across town, will stop at nothing to crush its mom-and-pop competitor. And the rival vet practice isn't Cyrus's only competition; a handsome stranger shows up out of nowhere who clearly has a mysterious past with Amy. To top it off, Cyrus finds himself both the guardian of a very unique orphaned dog and smack in the middle of serious small town drama.
This charming sequel to The Patron Saint of Lost Dogs is a wild and delightful ride through one jam- packed week, where Cyrus must figure out how to outsmart the evil veterinary conglomerate, win back Amy's heart, solve several tricky veterinary cases, find a home for an orphaned dog, and detangle himself from an absurd case of mistaken identity. DOG GONE, BACK SOON brims with Nick Trout's trademark humor, charm, and captivating animal stories, and is proof that all dogs, lost or not, on four feet or two, deserve a second chance.

Title: Pretty Reckless by Jodi Linton
Description: Welcome to Pistol Rock, Texas where everyone knows secrets last about as long as the sporadic west Texas rain showers.
Laney Briggs has long been considered reckless by the denizens of her hometown, but she’s finally turned it all around—she’s happily engaged to the local veterinarian and she’s become a Pistol Rock deputy sheriff. Everything’s fine and dandy—until a dead body turns up and her ex, Texas Ranger Gunner Wilson, decides to stick his boots into the town’s first murder case. Of course, the troublesome cowboy’s rugged good looks and T-shirt-straining muscles are already leaving Laney knee-deep in hot water, but she’ll be damned if she lets Gunner trample all over her turf. She’s decided that, instead of conflict, she wants a contented, steady life with her vet—a life in which Gunner Wilson and his seemingly endless ability to undermine her resolve and her libido plays no part. Still, it’s hard to keep her head as forbidden sparks ignite and suspicions arise between old rivals and old flames. And when the bodies start to pile up, Laney has to ask the lethal bad boy for a hand—and a truce in exchange for his help. But after uncovering the pack of lies surrounding not only her job but her heart… Having an ex-boyfriend as an ally might not be the best idea, but it’s certainly the most reckless, and Laney has always been pretty reckless…

Title: The Word Exchange by Alena Graedon
Description: A dystopian novel for the digital age, The Word Exchange offers an inventive, suspenseful, and decidedly original vision of the dangers of technology and of the enduring power of the printed word.
In the not-so-distant future, the forecasted “death of print” has become a reality. Bookstores, libraries, newspapers, and magazines are things of the past, and we spend our time glued to handheld devices called Memes that not only keep us in constant communication but also have become so intuitive that they hail us cabs before we leave our offices, order takeout at the first growl of a hungry stomach, and even create and sell language itself in a marketplace called the Word Exchange.
Anana Johnson works with her father, Doug, at the North American Dictionary of the English Language (NADEL), where Doug is hard at work on the last edition that will ever be printed. Doug is a staunchly anti-Meme, anti-tech intellectual who fondly remembers the days when people used email (everything now is text or videoconference) to communicate—or even actually spoke to one another, for that matter. One evening, Doug disappears from the NADEL offices, leaving a single written clue: ALICE. It’s a code word he devised to signal if he ever fell into harm’s way. And thus begins Anana’s journey down the proverbial rabbit hole . . .
Joined by Bart, her bookish NADEL colleague, Anana’s search for Doug will take her into dark basements and subterranean passageways; the stacks and reading rooms of the Mercantile Library; and secret meetings of the underground resistance, the Diachronic Society. As Anana penetrates the mystery of her father’s disappearance and a pandemic of decaying language called “word flu” spreads, The Word Exchange becomes a cautionary tale that is at once a technological thriller and a meditation on the high cultural costs of digital technology.

Selena is engaged to Melvin – the perfect man – but is also keen to befriend the ever-demanding Donny ... until she falls pregnant and her wedding looms.
Donny expresses his true feelings at the wedding, causing mayhem and anger. But there remains a chink of hope: perhaps Selena’s marriage to Melvin is not quite as perfect as it seems.

Title: Into The Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes

Driven into the darkest corner of her world, and trusting no one, she plans a meticulous escape. REVIEW: Ever After by Kim Harrison
Title: Ever After (The Hollows #11)
Author: Kim Harrison
Publisher: Harper Voyager
Publication Date: January, 2013
Genre: Urban Fantasy
Description: The ever after, the demonic realm that parallels the human world, is shrinking. If it disappears completely, so does all magic. It's up to witch-turned-daywalking-demon Rachel Morgan to avert catastrophe and keep life from changing... for the worse.
While saving the world is important, it isn't Rachel's only motivation. There's also the small fact that she caused the ley line to rip in the first place, setting off a chain reaction of unfortunate events. That little mistake has made her life forfeit unless she can fix it. It's also made her more than a few enemies, including the most powerful demon in the ever after—a terrifying entity who eats souls and now has an insatiable appetite for her. He's already kidnapped her friend and goddaughter to lure her out, and if Rachel doesn't give herself up soon, they'll die.
But Rachel has more than a few impressive and frightening skills of her own, and she isn't going to hand over her soul and her life without one hell of a fight. She's also got a surprise: elven tycoon Trent Kalamack. With this unlikely ally beside her—a prospect both thrilling and unnerving—she's going to return to the ever after, kick some demon butt, rescue her loved ones... and prevent an apocalypse before it's too late. Or, at least that's the plan...
My Thoughts: I had a hard time reading this book because knowing this series is nearing the end made the reading so much more bittersweet. This series has been so much fun to read and I will miss Rachel and her friends when it is over. With Ever After, the reader is given a lot to wade through. Rachel has been blamed for causing the ever after to begin shrinking. In case you are just now tuning in, the ever after is the demonic realm where Al lives. Ku’Sox is the one to blame but he has manipulated the other demons into believing Rachel has done it and if she doesn’t fix it, they will kill her and “allow” Ku’Sox to fix it. Ku’Sox is a tool and I despise him, but he is an excellent villain and this series needed one. Unfortunately, he kidnaps Ceri and Lucy to draw Rachel out to kill her. Trent and Al started out villainous, but they aren’t so much anymore. Nick started out decent but has turned into a tool as well, but he’s weak in mind and spirit and I don’t foresee him as much as a threat to Rachel. Without giving anything away, I will say that Nick deserves every bad and painful thing coming to him when the karma bus runs him over, backs up and runs him over again.
Rachel and Trent work very closely in this installment and if I had been told in the first book that there would be major chemistry of a romantic nature between them, I would have projectile vomited all over the place. I don’t know what happened here. I didn’t think I could ever see Trent in any other light than vile and manipulative. He has been the source of most of Rachel’s problems throughout the whole series. But I am weak and now I am intrigued to see what happens with them. Do I want to see Rachel with Trent? I don’t know. Do I want to see Rachel with Al? See the previous answer. Trying to figure out Al and Trent is nearly impossible. I have serious trust issues with both of them, but like a moth to a flame, I am compelled to come closer even though there is a huge chance I will get burned.
Jenks is still my favorite and I never tire of him and all of his kids. If anyone deserves a happy ending in this series more than anyone, it’s him. Ivy is a hot mess and with Felix as an enemy, Rachel and Jenks should get the heck out of Dodge and distance themselves as far from Ivy as possible. We get to see more interactions with the gargoyles in this installment and I really enjoyed that. Bis is an interesting character and finding out more about him and meeting his relatives was enjoyable.
My Final Verdict: Fans of this series will enjoy this story and if you are new to the series, it is vital that the series be read in order. The characters are easy to relate to and I found myself caring about what happens to them, but you will miss a lot of character development if you don’t read them in order. This story packs a punch that left me reeling. I laughed and cried and got angry while reading this book. I am eagerly looking forward to the next book to see what Rachel, Trent, Al and Jenks get into next. Knowing them, I am sure it will be intense and I am looking forward to going along for the ride.

REVIEW: Boss Girl by Nic Tatano
Title: Boss Girl
Author: Nic Tatano
Publisher: Harper Impulse
Publication Date: February, 2014
Genre: Chick-Lit
Description: Sydney Hack is the single, thirtysomething VP of news for a failing network… and she also has a taste for younger men.
She soon realizes a whole lot of over-thirty female viewers do as well, so she sets out to give these women what they want; a chiseled, trophy buck in his twenties sitting on the anchor desk next to a woman…
Just.
Like.
Them.
With nothing to lose she does the unthinkable; along with three female managers who happen to be her best friends she brings out the casting couch and turns it into a sleeper sofa. Doesn't matter that the men have no television experience. As long as they look good. And there’s a hint of romance in every newscast.
Ratings skyrocket as a result, but Sydney and her female cohorts discover something else along the way…
True love is not always age appropriate.
My Thoughts: I was provided with a complimentary copy of Boss Girl in exchange for an honest review. Nic Tatano is a new to me author and I have been intrigued for many years by the male author’s perspective in the chick-lit genre. I find the story lines refreshing and daring so if you are hesitating to read a chick-lit by a male author, let me stop you right there and save you from making a very big mistake.
With Boss Girl, Mr. Tatano takes the age old “casting couch” mentality and hurls it out the window in a bold and hilarious manner by putting women in the dominant positions for a change. It’s about time, I say! Men have been using this tactic for years and it’s high time the tables were turned, so to speak. Men who want to work for these women now find themselves being required to sleep with these women as part of their job. It should come as no surprise to anyone that these men are completely willing participants. This story centers mainly on Sydney Hack, the VP of a network struggling to compete in the ratings market. She decides to start pairing older female anchors that can’t get hired anywhere else because of their age with younger, hot men, regardless of their resume. The only references Sydney and her best friends want to check are those in the boudoir. The secondary characters of Rica, Neely and Jillian bring this story to hilarious levels as these women are all sampling the offerings and even have a draft event to decide who gets who.
I didn’t know what to expect when I first read the description but I decided to keep an open mind. My first thought was this sounds like erotica, but it’s not. For a story that features sex as the main plot device, there are no crude, graphic or descriptive play by play narratives. Mr. Tatano does a brilliant job of giving the reader just enough for their imagination to kick in with the rest. The characters are amazing, strong, successful women who want what all women want. To be accepted, respected and treated well. To be judged on merits and successes, not on bra size or age. This story also is about relationships…the ones that are difficult and the ones that occur when they least expect it.
My Final Verdict: So, what are you waiting for? Get out there and get this book. I am looking forward to reading everything Nic Tatano writes. If you want a story with strong characters, sassy dialogue and hilarious plots, Boss Girl is an excellent choice.

New Additions To The TBR Pile In February
Wow, February saw a lot of new additions to my pile, thanks in great part to Net Galley and the numerous requests for reviews I have gotten. I am actually ahead of schedule with my annual reading goal so the usual stress and anxiety I feel when I acquire more than I am reading is not present. Here are the new additions to my book family, in no particular order...
Title: Boss Girl by Nic Tatano
Title: Drink Slay Love by Sarah Beth Durst
Description: Pearl is a sixteen-year-old vampire... fond of blood, allergic to sunlight, and mostly evil... until the night a sparkly unicorn stabs her through the heart with his horn. Oops.
Her family thinks she was attacked by a vampire hunter (because, obviously, unicorns don't exist), and they're shocked she survived. They're even more shocked when Pearl discovers she can now withstand the sun. But they quickly find a way to make use of her new talent. The Vampire King of New England has chosen Pearl's family to host his feast. If Pearl enrolls in high school, she can make lots of human friends and lure them to the King's feast -- as the entrees.
The only problem? Pearl's starting to feel the twinges of a conscience. How can she serve up her new friends—especially the cute guy who makes her fangs ache—to be slaughtered? Then again, she's definitely dead if she lets down her family. What's a sunlight-loving vamp to do?
Title: Ever After by Kim Harrison

What's the craziest thing you'll do for love?
Title: Sugar Spun Sister by Anna Garner

Title: The Divorce Papers by Susan Rieger
Description: Twenty-nine-year-old Sophie Diehl is happy toiling away as a criminal law associate at an old line New England firm where she very much appreciates that most of her clients are behind bars. Everyone at Traynor, Hand knows she abhors face-to-face contact, but one weekend, with all the big partners away, Sophie must handle the intake interview for the daughter of the firm’s most important client. After eighteen years of marriage, Mayflower descendant Mia Meiklejohn Durkheim has just been served divorce papers in a humiliating scene at the popular local restaurant, Golightly’s. She is locked and loaded to fight her eminent and ambitious husband, Dr. Daniel Durkheim, Chief of the Department of Pediatric Oncology, for custody of their ten-year-old daughter Jane—and she also burns to take him down a peg. Sophie warns Mia that she’s never handled a divorce case before, but Mia can’t be put off. As she so disarmingly puts it: It’s her first divorce, too.
Debut novelist Susan Rieger doesn’t leave a word out of place in this hilarious and expertly crafted debut that shines with the power and pleasure of storytelling. Told through personal correspondence, office memos, emails, articles, and legal papers, this playful reinvention of the epistolary form races along with humor and heartache, exploring the complicated family dynamic that results when marriage fails. For Sophie, the whole affair sparks a hard look at her own relationships—not only with her parents, but with colleagues, friends, lovers, and most importantly, herself. Much like Where’d You Go, Bernadette, The Divorce Papers will have you laughing aloud and thanking the literature gods for this incredible, fresh new voice in fiction.
Title: The Harlow Hoyden by Lynn Messina
